H111 - Understanding, Modeling, Forecasting and Mitigation of Urban and Riverine Flood Risks in South Asia

 Dear Colleagues,

We'd like to invite abstract submissions to our AGU#21 session “H111 - Understanding, Modeling, Forecasting and Mitigation of Urban and Riverine Flood Risks in South Asia.”

The session is detailed below. This will be a virtual-only session to enable wider participation. Submission deadline is 4 August 2021.

Session Title:  H111. Understanding, Modeling, Forecasting and Mitigation of Urban and Riverine Flood Risks in South Asia

Submission Website: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm21/prelim.cgi/Session/124900

Session Description: Floods in river basins and urban regions of South Asia in general and Indian subcontinent in particular are driven by intense monsoonal rains ruing the wet seasons. Thus, the floods tend to be devastating in their magnitude and duration. This, combined with high density of population and marginal infrastructure, leads to significant loss of life and property, during each rainy season. These risks are projected to be exacerbated by a warmer climate. Hence, understanding their space-time variability of floods, combined with skillful forecasts and risk-based management of flood plains the impacts can be mitigated. The session welcomes papers covering but not limited to – space-time variability of flood and related rainfall extremes; modeling and forecasting of floods on rivers and in urban areas at multiple time scales, using physical and statistical methods; Integration of satellite data for flood modeling, monitoring and mitigation tools; and stakeholder participation in flood management.
