Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to submit an abstract to H094 – River Networks: Connecting Forms and Functions for the 2021 AGU Fall Meeting.
We are looking forward to invited presentations from Paola Passalacqua (University of Texas at Austin) and Bernhard Lehner (McGill University) and hope to attract an interdisciplinary group of presenters who study Earth’s river networks, with an eye toward new developments in representing and analyzing their structures and modeling their flows and fluxes.
Session Description:
River networks connect landscapes and waterbodies while storing and transporting fluxes of water, sediment, and nutrients critical for ecosystem and human functioning. Understanding and predicting how river networks will adapt to climate stressors and human impacts requires blending knowledge of their structures with the dynamics occurring within these structures. New opportunities for characterizing both river network forms and functions are increasingly available as satellite technologies continue to expand. We aim to bring together studies of river network topology and morphology with those of their dynamics, including streamflow modeling, biogeochemical cycling, and flux transport. We welcome efforts focused on connectivity and toward creating, improving, or exploiting representations of river networks, such as applications/advancement of the National Water Model on the National Hydrography Dataset. Further, we invite contributions that feature novel river network mapping techniques from satellite images or DEMs. Studies on both tributary and distributary networks at any scale are welcome.
